More than 60 percent of the construction schedule of the soccer stadium located in Brasilia that will host seven FIFA World Cup matches in 2014 has already been completed. At the building site located in the north wing of the city designed by urban planner Lúcio Costa, 12 Potain tower cranes support more than 3,000 workers who operate on two shifts a day, six days a week.

The civil construction work is due on December 31 and according to the Consórcio Brasília 2014, a partnership that includes Construtora Andrade Gutierrez and Via Engenharia S/A, the schedule is running as planned.

Standing out among the busy traffic of mixer trucks and pumping trucks and the long concrete injection hoses, the different Potain crane models set up by Locabens and Construservice cover 92% of the building site. Eight Potain cranes, the MC 115BMC125MC175B and the MC205B have been set up in the outer area on 2m2 towers by the Locabens planning team to exceed 50 meters in height without the use of anchors. In the inner area, which surrounds Mané Garrincha’s former playing field, another four large MC 310K12 Potain tower cranes featuring 60 m long spears operate inside the arena, which already contains the finished lower and middle stands.

Among other key components of the project, Potain cranes helped building the 288 pillars of the stadium. To achieve that, the tower cranes were lifting steel tubular frames featuring a 1.3 m diameter and a 5.8 m length. The frames were stacked upon the pillars one by one until each structure reached 45 meters.

From a longer distance, if one crosses the city along the Eixo Monumental inaugurated by President Kubitschek, one can only make out the 12 huge yellow towers cranes and the pillars that surround the arena, designed to be the first in South America to get the LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which is aimed at buildings with high environmental and energy-saving performance.

Eventually, the new stadium will be inaugurated in April 2013 and will stage several large events, such as the opening of the Confederations Cup, the match for the third place of the 2014 World Cup, and the football games of the 2016 Olympics, among others.
